It seems that Windows Update problems aren’t limited to Windows 7 and Vista. I heard from a reader last week who was experiencing an issue installing update KB2656352 on Windows XP. The problem seems similar to the Windows 7/Vista issue we looked at a couple of weeks ago. When the reader tries to install the update it appears to work fine, but when the reader next opened Windows Update, the update was still stuck there. But in this case, XP also lists KB2656352 as already being installed.
Update KB2656352 is a security update, so it is important that it gets installed on your system, to minimise the hacker threat. The easiest way to clear the blockage is to reset Windows Update, using the Microsoft FixIt tool. This will reset the Windows Update subsystem, and should allow the update to be installed normally.
To reset Windows Update in XP, visit the following page: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 and click on Run now. Once the fix is applied, reboot your system and run Windows Update again.
